In the majority of cases Lap Band surgery is performed laparoscopically which means that the procedure requires only minimal incisions and stitches. Because a laparoscopic surgery is minimally-invasive it leaves little scarring and allows the patient to recover faster. (Laparoscopic Lap Band surgery can be completed within 1 - 2 hours. In some cases the surgery maybe performed on outpatient basis; in others the surgeon may elect to keep the patient hospitalized for one day after the surgery as an additional safety measure.)
Patients recover after the Lap Band surgery within weeks. Their bodies need to adjust to the change created by Lap Band and that's why for the first couple of weeks patients are limited to a liquid diet. Eventually, patients progress to a semi-fluid diet and after a period of adjustment are able to eat solid food.
Lap Band surgery is often times elective which means that isn't always covered by the patient's insurance.
